Good areas around Edwards AFB, CA?

we are about to move to edwards afb in a few months. I've been looking at the different areas around the base, all have really high crime rates. I've also read the schools are really bad. We are will toi live an hr away if needed. We like the mountains. so we are looking for something there if possible. Is there any good areas or is it just best to live on base?
